Description:

This is a one-year Complex GI Fellowship with a focus in bariatric surgery and bariatric endoscopy. Fellows have the opportunity to learn/participate in all aspects of the care of the morbidly obese surgical patient.

The Fellow will also have assigned endoscopy time to evaluate and treat pre- and post-op patients, including exposure to bariatric endoscopy.

In addition, there will be the opportunity to learn about obesity medicine, including the use of anti-obesity medication as an adjunct to bariatric surgery, preparing Fellows to take the American Board of Obesity Medicine Certification Exam.

Didactic sessions and Journal Clubs incuding video presentations, covering all major topics of bariatric surgery including revision, malabsorbtive, restrictive, and nutritional deficits and complications. The fellows also participate in SSAT grand rounds.

Clinically based research opportunities are available and it is expected that the fellows will carry out projects for presentation at national meetings.

Fellows completing this program will be well prepared to organize and operate a bariatric program in an academic or private practice setting.

Medical School Requirements:

    We accept graduates of U.S. or Canadian Medical Schools and Foreign Medical Schools
    We accept graduates of Foreign Medical Schools only if ECFMG Certified

Examinations and Certifications:

    Applicants must have passed the USMLE/COMLEX Step 1, 2, & 3 exams
    Applicants must have passed the USMLE/COMLEX Step 1 & 2 exams or the Medical Council of Canada Evaluation Exam (MCCEE)
    Applicants must have passed the TOEFEL exam
    Applicants must have had at least 2 years of prior training in an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship (or Canadian equivalent)
    Applicants who are ABS or Canadian Board Eligible or Certified
    Applicants who hold a General Surgery specialty certificate from a Board or College outside of U.S. or Canada at the beginning of the fellowship
    Applicants must have had at least 2 years of prior training in an AOA (American Osteopathic Association) accredited residency or fellowship
    Applicants must be AOBS (American Osteopathic Board of Surgery) eligible or certified

 

Licensure Requirements and Information:

A New Jersey State license is required, during fellowship, so all fellows should be eligable to get a NJ state medical license.

    We do not get any Money from ACGME.

    Our Fellow is provided an extra 250 monthly for meals, and they are allow to moonlight at our institution as desire.

Clinical Outpatient Experience

The Fellow is involved with the Clinic of the the teaching attendings, and will see patients pre and post op on a weekly basis.  The fellow will also be involve in a free Clinic and manage some pre and post op patients as the primary caregiver under supervision.
