Description:

This one year Clinical Fellowship encompasses all aspects of MIS and Robotic surgery.  The fellow will spend most of their time gaining clinical experience but there will be dedicated time for research and teaching as well.  This program operates as a mentorship and the fellow can expect to operate from the outset.  We try to match the fellow's experience with their career goals in MIS.  In our academic environment, interaction with basic scientists, clinicians and students is promoted throughout the fellowship.  We promote a healthy relationship with the resident on the service so there is no competition for cases.

The large case load provides the fellow with the experience that is necessary to operate independently.  There will also be ample time to develop decision making skills in the outpatient clinic setting.  We keep our fellow's schedule free from call requirements so that they can concentrate on their training in the operating room and clinic.  The fellow does participate on weekend rounds intermittently.

The Fellow will spend the bulk of their clinical time on the Bariatric/MIS service.  This service provides laparoscopic and robotic experience in all forms of bariatric surgery, advanced hernia repair, solid organ and foregut surgery.  The fellow will be exposed to a large robotic case volume. We have a very large robotic case series for bariatric surgery. We also have a high volume robotic component separation practice. The fellow will become proficient in all aspects of robotics.  There are multiple dual-console robots available for training at the institution.  In addition, there will be ample robotic and laparoscopic single incision surgery experience if desired.  The service also performs a large amount of endoscopies including both revisional bariatric procedures and endoscopic fundoplications.

In addition, there is an opportunity to spend time on other surgical specialties focused on Minimally Invasive techniques.

Fellows will also have the opportunity to take emergency and/or trauma call at the attending level but this is not required.
